Christmas House

We only had a half hour here on an excursion. I'm sure it's even more adorable at Christmas time. However, it was extremely crowded and most items were "Made in China" commercial drab. The world's largest advent calendar was by far my favorite. A lovely hidden surprise. It's probably not fair to judge because I'm from the U.S. and we have Bronner's in Michigan, but even the gas station Christmas store about an hour away from me in Texas felt more impressive than this.

Cute place. Fun addition to day trip in Akureyri. We went in middle of a Friday in May, so not all of it was open… (We were craving hot chocolate, but that part was closed.) Still, brought out the kid at heart!

The Christmas House is a lovely little stop to make on your journey around Akureyri. The farm shop is fantastic and offers delicious homemade jams and chutneys. They even have tasters available so you know exactly what you are getting before you buy.

The Christmas House is undeniably cute from the outside and looks like it belongs in a storybook. The cozy red house, festive music, and sparkling decorations make it feel instantly magical as soon as you step inside. Wandering through the rooms filled with ornaments, lights, and holiday displays is fun, and it’s easy to get swept up in the nostalgic, whimsical atmosphere. That said, we left feeling a bit mixed about the experience. We were surprised by how much of the merchandise in the shop came from outside of Iceland. We had hoped to see more Icelandic craftsmanship, traditional ornaments, and locally produced holiday items, which would have made the visit feel more meaningful and unique to Akureyri. It’s a charming place for a quick look, but overall it feels more like a tourist stop than a truly special or culturally distinctive Christmas experience.

There’s no over-the-top spectacle—just an inviting, beautifully curated space that feels personal, cozy, and genuinely joyful. Staff members are friendly and enthusiastic, happy to point out unique handmade decorations or share a laugh about Iceland’s famously mischievous Yule Cat (who apparently judges your Christmas clothing choices). Visiting here feels less like sightseeing and more like being welcomed into someone’s very festive home. Whether you’re shopping for keepsakes, escaping the winter chill, or simply leaning into peak Christmas energy, the Christmas House near Akureyri offers the perfect blend of charm, tradition, and good-natured holiday humor—no reindeer required.
