Back in 2008, getting a mortgage in Ireland seemed to require little more than a pair of functional limbs and a roughly humanoid shape. By 2012, the Celtic Tiger was long gone, and things had changed dramatically. Even with two decent incomes, getting a mortgage application into the system — never mind approved — involved jumping through a ridiculous number of hoops. That was when I was applying for my first mortgage, and Barry Clarke from IMB made all the difference. Without his help, I might genuinely still be renting today. Barry was friendly, professional, and very practical. He took the time to understand my individual circumstances and helped build a mortgage application that actually made sense for my situation. More importantly, he knew where to place it — in front of the right person, in the right bank — which was probably the key factor in getting it over the line. The cost was also very reasonable: less than half of one monthly mortgage repayment, which in hindsight was exceptional value. One caveat: this was around 14 years ago, so I cannot personally vouch for IMB’s service today. But based on my experience with Barry at the time, I was very happy with the service and would have no hesitation recommending him.
